Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about building roadmaps with Shira.
Getting Started
What is Shira?
Shira is a roadmap tool built for people who build a roadmap every few weeks or every quarter, not every day. Build it directly on a canvas — drag activities and milestones into shape — and export the result as a polished PowerPoint slide, an image, a shareable link, or a plain file.
Who is Shira for?
People who aren't professional product managers but still need to produce a credible visual roadmap on a recurring basis — brand managers, solutions architects and consultants, marketing leads, and program managers. If a board update, a client timeline, or a campaign calendar occasionally lands on your desk, Shira is built for that moment, not for running a full-time product process.
Do I need an account to try it?
You can try the roadmap editor with limited functionality without an account.
Is Shira free?
Getting started is free, with no credit card required. When you create an account, you'll get a 14-day free trial. For current plan details, check the pricing page directly, since specifics can change.
Building Your Roadmap
How do I add an activity?
Click anywhere on the canvas — no dialog box required. An activity appears right where you clicked, ready to rename, resize, or move.
How do I add a milestone?
Hold Alt (Option on macOS) and click a row to add a milestone without opening a dialog. If a category already has a milestone row, just click it to add another — Shira automatically stacks additional milestones into new rows so nothing overlaps.
Can I move an activity to a different row without changing its dates?
Yes — hold Command (macOS) or Control (Windows) while dragging it to another row, and its dates stay locked in place.
What happens if I try to overlap two activities?
Shira won't let them overlap. If an edit or a duration change would cause two activities to collide, the layout adjusts automatically to keep them apart.
Can I duplicate an activity?
Yes — the duplicate appears directly in the row below the original.
How do I create a new category?
Drag an activity toward the bottom of the roadmap — a placeholder appears there for creating a new category on the fly.
Can I undo a mistake?
Yes, with dedicated undo and redo controls in the toolbar.
What timescales are available?
Day, Week, Month, Quarter, Half Year, or Year. Day is available on roadmaps of 45 days or less, and Week on roadmaps of 100 days or less, since finer resolutions stop being readable beyond that.
How long can a roadmap span?
At minimum, 28 days. There's no fixed maximum.
Can I zoom or adjust density?
Yes — zoom from 100% up to 300%, and choose Comfortable, Compact, or Condensed row density depending on how much you need visible at once.
Snapshots & Version History
What's a snapshot?
A named, frozen copy of your roadmap at a specific moment — a baseline before a replan, the version the steering committee saw, or the plan as it stood at the start of the quarter. Take one from the canvas toolbar any time, and either name it yourself or accept the suggested date-and-time name.
How many snapshots can I keep?
Up to 10 per roadmap. A snapshot count sits next to the roadmap title, so you always know if a roadmap has checkpoints behind it.
Can I compare a snapshot to my current plan?
Yes. Open the snapshot viewer, choose “Compare with…”, and lay an earlier snapshot under the current version. Shira draws and counts everything added, changed, and removed since — right on the canvas.
Can I isolate just what changed?
Yes — click any one of the added, changed, or removed counts to isolate just that category, with everything else pushed back.
What if I renamed an item since the snapshot?
Renamed items show both the old and new name, and a rename counts as a change.
What's the difference between a snapshot and version history?
A snapshot is something you deliberately name and keep, up to 10 per roadmap. Version history is automatic — every save to the cloud becomes its own timestamped version, with no naming and no limit of 10. Version history is currently in beta.
Can I go back to an old version?
Yes — open Version History from the main menu, browse up to 100 recent versions (each timestamped to the second), preview any of them on the canvas, then restore it or extract it into a brand-new roadmap so you keep both.
What does “Extract to new roadmap” do?
It turns a snapshot or a past version into a roadmap of its own, so you can keep planning from that point without touching your current plan. Shira asks for confirmation before doing it.
Exporting and Sharing
Can I export to PowerPoint?
Yes — Export to PPTX is currently in beta. It's built from native PowerPoint shapes and objects, so you can keep editing it directly in PowerPoint afterward. Since it's still in beta, some elements may not render perfectly yet.
Can I export as an image?
Yes, as a PNG, generated at full roadmap height.
Can I share a roadmap without sending a file?
Yes. Turn sharing on and Shira gives you a link. Anyone who opens it sees a clean, read-only version — no account, no install, nothing they can accidentally change — and it always reflects your current saved version.
Is there a faster way to share a roadmap that's already shared?
Yes — from the dashboard, the share icon on an already-shared roadmap opens its public view directly, in one click.
Your Account and Data
Where is my roadmap saved?
To your account in the cloud, automatically, as you work.
What is the .shira file format?
A plain, documented JSON format you can download, back up, keep in version control, send to someone, or generate with your own scripts — published openly, not a proprietary black box.
Can I download a roadmap without opening it?
Yes, directly from the dashboard, as a .shira file.
Can I delete a roadmap I don't need anymore?
Yes, from the row menu on the dashboard.
Can I change my password?
Yes, from My Account, without leaving Shira.
What if my account is suspended?
Your work stays yours — a suspended account can still download its roadmaps. The suspension notice points directly to billing so you can resolve it.
Pricing
Is there a free plan?
Getting started is free, with no credit card required. For current plan details and limits, check the pricing page directly, since specifics can change.
What happens if I decide it's not for me?
Cancel anytime — and since your roadmaps stay exportable as open .shira files or PowerPoint decks, you keep what you built.
